Before a voyage and during work on board, an experienced seafarer should pay attention to the validity of ECDIS charts, correct route planning, ECDIS safety settings, alarms and warnings, comparison of GPS position with radar and visual references, knowledge of backup navigation procedures, prohibition of unknown USB devices, access rules for ship computers, suspicious emails, digital failures, unusual behavior of navigation systems and the company’s cyber security procedures.
This approach demonstrates professionalism and reduces the risk of errors on board.
